What is Separation Anxiety?
Separation anxiety usually occurs when a dog is left alone and is overcome with anguishing anxiety, causing minor to serious changes in demeanor. The changes in the dog’s behavior range from damaging chewing, incessant barking, whining for long periods, defecation, and uncontrollable urination. This behavior is usually apparent as soon as the owner leaves the home, with the pet becoming depressed or anxious. However, additional signs include following the owner very closely prior to leaving the home, exhibiting exuberant, frenzied attentive behaviors, and overreaction of enthusiasm. Additionally, attempts to escape by a dog that is suffering from separation anxiety are usually severe cases, which can result in serious injury and destruction of the home.
