Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are drugs that are classified as both anxiolytics and antidepressants. SSRI’s have a lengthier effect than tricyclic antidepressants and may require a longer period of continued use in order to see the desired results. There are three SSRI’s that are prescribed by veterinarians for dogs, Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft.

Prozac, which is generically known, as fluoxetine is the most prescribed SSRI for dogs. Prozac is used in the treatment of separation anxiety, avoidance and panic disorders, aggression, obsessive-compulsive disorders. Paxil, which is generically known as paroxetine, is used in treating depression and associated social anxiety and agitation. Zoloft, known generically as sertraline, is used for panic disorders and anxiety.
