Pharmaceutical Anxiety Medications
Anti anxiety medications also know as anxiolytics include benzodiazepines as well as azapirones, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). The benzodiazepines are used when a quicker response is needed. Azapirones, SSRI’s, and TCA’s are administered on a daily basis and generally take several weeks to several months before improvement is seen in the animal. All of the anxiolytics require a prescription and cannot be purchased over the counter. While veterinarians regularly prescribe these anxiolytics, Clomipramine is the only drug that has been approved by the FDA to be used for dogs. The drug manufacturers of benzo’s, TCA’s, SSRI’s, and azapirones have not received the necessary approval from the FDA due to the lack of formal submitted research. Despite the lack of FDA approval, many of these drugs during their research and development phases were tested on animals, and have been the work around for vets who prescribe these medications.
